Marti tells me that she has worked for the same company for 32 years. Because of a recent layoff she is going to need to learn how to network. To her that feels like a daunting task.
I get it. When we’ve worked for a long time with the same people we often don’t think about maintaining an outside network. Reaching out can feel uncomfortable at best.
Here is something I’ve learned about networking. We know that everyone wants to work with people that we know, like, and trust. The best networks are made up of people we would enjoy working with and who would enjoy working with us. Perhaps there was a young person who was on your team at one time who moved on. What about a person in the organization where you volunteer? How about someone from a former client you enjoyed working with on a project?
Who do you know that it would be enjoyable…dare I say fun…to catch up with them?
