A friend of mine has the ability to pick up a flute and improvise with whatever music is being played at the time. She said that it took years and years of playing chords and scales. Gradually it became a part of her.
When I asked how she was able to keep practicing all those years she said that music always was the place where she felt closest to God.
In other words, it wasn’t duty or “have to” or fear or lack that allowed her to stay with the practice. It was a sense of joy, a feeling, a deep desire, that pulled on her.
My experience with coaching has shown to me that how my friend became great as a flutist is true for any great skill or accomplishment whether that is a playing a musical instrument, developing a computer app, or leading a team. The inspiration comes first.
What inspires you?
