Marci and I are working on a project together. Despite working on the same project we don’t really know each other. Of course, not being able to meet in person right now doesn’t allow for many opportunities to just “hang out at the water cooler”.
Last week Marci asked if we could have a chat by phone. I assumed the call was about the project. Instead she said, “I appreciate your input at the meetings and would like to get to know you on a personal level.” We had a delightful conversation and I have no doubt that we will continue to build a friendship.
We may think that creating a network is just another job we have to do in order to build our career. Truth is, Marci has the right idea. Building trusted relationships with people you appreciate is the best kind of network. It’s enjoyable and works for you in good times and bad.
